tombstone of Catherine Lumbrezer

Catherine was the daughter of Jakob Anton Rothmund and Maria Margarita Nay. Her family spoke Romansh, and in that language, her name was "Margreta Catrina." The birth date given above comes from the Trun parish records; her tombstone, shown here, gives the year as 1824.

She married Peter Lumbrezer on 22 October 1846 in Trun.

Between 1847 and 1869, Peter and Catherine had six children:

  1. Thomas Anthony (13 Aug 1847 - 3 Jan 1936)
He married Elizabeth (May) Ruppel (1856-1946)
  2. Margaritha Catharina (Catherine) (16 Jun 1850 - 16 Sep 1944)
She married Joseph A. Miller (1845-1881)
  3. Maria Barla (b. 17 Mar 1853)
Little is known about her. She appears on the 1854 passenger list, and may have died in September 1882.
  4. Peter (1859-1862)
He died at the age of three.
  5. George (Dec 1861 - 24 Apr 1941)
He was unmarried, and worked as farmer.
  6. Peter II (4 Jun 1869 - 7 Oct 1871)
He died at the age of two.

A census conducted in March 1850 shows the family living in Ringgenberg, probably next to her parents, since the two families are adjacent in the census record.

She emigrated with her husband, three oldest children, and about 150 others from the Surselva. They departed in early May 1854 from Havre, France on board the St. Paul, which had 332 passengers. Several icebergs were seen during the voyage. The ship arrived at New York City on 31 May 1854 after 28 days at sea.

The family settled in Spencer Township, Lucas County, Ohio.

Catherine died at age 83 from "old age," and was buried on 14 May 1910 in the Immaculate Conception cemetery in Raabs.
