tombstone of Thomas and May Lumbrezer

Thomas was the eldest of four surviving children of Peter Lumbrezer and Catherine Rothmund. His family spoke Romansh, and in that language, his name was "Tumaisch Antoni." His date of birth appears to be 15 August 1847 on his death certificate, and his tombstone, shown here, gives 1848, but the birth date given above is from the parish records in Trun, Switzerland. He appears with his parents in the 1850 census of Zignau.

As a child of six, he emigrated with his parents and two younger sisters. They departed in early May 1854 from Havre, France on board the St. Paul, which had 332 passengers. Several icebergs were seen during the voyage. The ship arrived at New York City on 31 May 1854 after 28 days at sea.

The family settled in Spencer Township, Lucas County, Ohio.

Thomas married Elizabeth (May) Ruppel on 15 April 1875 at Immaculate Conception in Raabs, Ohio.

Between 1876 and 1895, Thomas and May had nine children, including Louis Peter (Louie) Lumbrezer.

Thomas worked as a farmer and initially owned about 16 acres in Richfield Township, Lucas County. He later acquired additional land.

Thomas died at age 88 from a cerebral hemorrhage, and was buried on 6 January 1936 in Immaculate Conception cemetery in Raabs.
