tombstone of G. C. Bartley, his mother, and his wives

Josephine was the second of three surviving children of Franz Joseph Ganter and Helena Menz. Her birth date, given above, is from her wedding record, although her tombstone, shown here, gives the year as 1820.

Josephine married Gebhard Bertele on 12 September 1843 in Friedrichshafen.

Between 1844 and 1851, Gebhard and Josephine had three children:

  1. Gebhard Carl (11 Dec 1844 - 7 Oct 1919)
He married Mary B. Tierney (1846-1873)
He remarried to Margaret Deppman (1849-1926)
  2. Anton Ferdinand L. (Fred) (3 Sep 1846 - 30 Nov 1915)
He was unmarried. Although born blind, he worked as a veterinary surgeon.
  3. Rudolph Anton (9 May 1851 - 8 Mar 1927)
He married Harriet Josephine (Hattie) Barnes (1852-1928)
He became a wealthy Toledo merchant in the wholesale grocery business.

By 1851, the family was living in Ravensburg, Württemberg.

Josephine emigrated with her family from the port of Antwerp on the Colombo. The ship left Flushing on 18 July 1853 with 258 passengers. It arrived at New York City on 29 August 1853, so the voyage took six weeks.

The family first settled in Perrysburg in Lucas County, Ohio, but moved after two years to Oregon Township.

Josephine died at age 37 , and was buried in St. Mary's (later, part of Mt. Carmel) cemetery in Toledo.
