Leona Kreuz

Leona was the sixth of eight children of Frank Meiring and Mary Anna Keeler.

She grew up on her father's farm at Secor Road and Central Avenue (the location of the present-day Westgate Shopping center in Toledo). Her mother died when she was seven. She reported receiving eight years of schooling, and graduated from Washington Township School in 1924.

Leona married Lawrence Kreuz on 17 September 1932 at Gesu Church in Toledo.

They lived on a 40-acre farm at the southwest corner of Frankfort Road and State Route 295, one mile east of Frankfort Corners in Harding Township, Lucas County.

Lawrence and Leona had two sons in 1933 and 1936. They also raised one of Lawrence's nieces after his sister, Clara Kreuz Sanderson, died in 1944. She lived with the family until she was about seven years old.

She remained on the farm after her husband's death in 1972, and then moved to Longwood Apartments (5444 Dorr Street) in Toledo, where she lived from about 1979 to 1993. From 1994, she lived in nursing homes near Delta, Ohio, and in Swanton. She broke her hip in June 1996, and spent a few weeks at Mercy Hospital in Toledo.

Leona died at age 88 from congestive heart failure, and was buried on 25 June 1998 in the Immaculate Conception Church cemetery in Raabs. She was survived by her two sons, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two sisters, and a brother.
