Martin Shears

Martin was of German descent. His surname appears in a bewildering number of forms, including "Sherer," "Shearer," "Scheares," "Shehr," "Scherr," and "Schaer."

Martin married Margrate Neck, presumably in Alsace.

Between 1829 and 1840, Martin and Margrate had three children, including Ursula Shears.

Martin emigrated with his family in 1846. His twelve-year old son died during the voyage.

Martin worked as a farmer. He bought forty acres of land from Erastus Corning on 28 October 1852. The land was at the southwest corner of Hill Avenue and what is now Elmdale, in Adams Township.

Martin died at age 70 from "lung fever," just days after his wife. His date of death was either 25 December (Lucas Country records) or 28 December (St. Peter's records). Martin and Margrate were buried in Calvary cemetery in Toledo. Their grave is an unmarked one behind the Meiring graves.

The forty acre farm was divided equally between their two daughters.
