Kate Bauer

Kate was the third of six surviving children of Lorenz Gerten and Maria Anna Fischer. She was born in Spang, and christened in the Catholic church the following day. (Note that her tombstone shows a date of 1850.)

Kate emigrated at the age of 23 with her sister, Eva, and Eva's husband, Theodore Wolf. They were passengers on the Westphalia, which left from Hamburg and stopped at Havre on its trip across the Atlantic. The ship arrived at New York City on 23 April 1873 after a voyage of two weeks. Kate and the others arrived in Sandusky, Ohio on 27 April, and she lived there for a time (Kate and Eva's older brother John had emigrated earlier, and lived in Sandusky).

Kate married Nicholas (Nick) Bauer on 11 April 1874 at St. Mary's in Sandusky.

Between 1875 and 1896, Nick and Kate had nine children:

  1. Catherine (19 Oct 1875 - 4 Jan 1881)
She died of "black diphtheria" at the age of five.
  2. Sarah (29 Sep 1877 - 9 Jan 1881)

He died as an infant from inflammation of the bowels, probably appendicitis.

    She was unmarried.

    She married Joseph Lumbrezer* (1880-1956)
  6. John Edward (15 Aug 1886 - 25 Jun 1963)
He married Pearl M. Treydoubble (1889-1974)
He was a public school maintenance worker.
  7. Peter Nicholas (4 May 1889 - 8 Apr 1960)
He was unmarried. He worked as a truck driver and farmer.

  9. Kathryn Eva (16 Mar 1896 - 18 Jan 1990)
She married Lawrence Michael Lumbrezer* (1884-1969)
Kathryn worked as a cook at St. Mary's school cafeteria in Assumption.

[* Joseph, Louie, and Lawrence Lumbrezer were brothers.]

Kate and her family lived in Amboy Township, Fulton County.

Kate died at age 83 from myocarditis at her home, and was buried on 9 May 1933 in St. Mary's cemetery in Assumption, Ohio.
